Please take into consideration, not all of the following are signs that a player is bluffing, all the time. These are all relative signs. If the player has not once had his arms crossed, then raises all-in and crosses his arms as he awaits your decision, he might just be bluffing. Everything is relative to the normal players actions. Some players are fidgety by nature, even without bluffing. Some players sit with their arms crossed 80% of the time they are playing and so that may not be a sign for that particular player.
- Crossed arms.
- Less eye contact than normal.
- Eye movements, up and to the left (from our point of view) for a right handed person, opposite for left handed person. (hard to tell with sunglasses)
- Pupils narrow. (this is normally useless with the distance at the table and the sunglasses that every poker player wears)
- Body movements.
- Hands on the face when normally they are not.
- The rate at which the eyes are blinking.
- Sudden change in nature, becoming talkative or talking quickly.
It can be very hard to tell if a poker player is lying. Most good poker players will mix it up so you can never truly tell. Knowing some of the subconscious movements they may make without knowing it is one of the only ways to tell if they are lying. You have to be very observant to pick these small tells up.
To be really effective you have to know your enemies at the table. This would require that you play with them for extended periods of time. Many games online are not long haul games. You may never play with a player again. You really don’t get enough time to get to know what thy enemy is doing at your table in many online games. You can’t expect to be reading their body language online. The enemy can’t see you either and, if you’re not good at hiding your emotions, you may find playing online a lot easier.
