 Playing Against Tight Players

This strategy works particularly well at a table that has a large number of tight players who fold a lot.

During every single betting round bet the exact same amount of money, 2 to 4 times the big blind. You should bet just enough money so it doesn’t hurt you too badly if you lose, but enough to make the tight players fold every time they don’t have anything. You want to bet the minimum amount of money so you can get them to fold consistently. If your hand isn’t good enough to bet 2x the big blind, then maybe you shouldn’t be in the hand. To be honest, if you don’t have enough to be betting 2x the big blind, then either the blinds are too high to employ this strategy, or you’re in survival mode and shouldn’t try being too aggressive.

The beauty about this strategy is that the tight players will fold more often than not, allowing you to take the pot. They will win once in a while because of their cards, but so will you. The best part is you will know when they have you beat every time because it will be the one time they are actually calling you or raising you. This gives you information about their hand. You can sometimes tell they are just calling for the chance of drawing a card that will help them. This is when continuation of your betting will hurt them. Most times people are drawing when chances are they won’t get what they want. This means the tight player may call your bet on the flop and the turn card, but if after the river comes, his cards haven’t hit the board, he will probably fold to you.
